Treasure hunting as a job has existed since ancient times. Its representatives can devote their entire lives to searching for ancient jewelry and artifacts. However, sometimes treasures are found by those who are not looking for them at all. This is exactly what happened a few years ago in the Czech Republic. A young couple unexpectedly discovered one of the largest treasures in the history of the country!

It happened in 2020 in the western part of the Czech Republic. Young people were walking through the forest near the town of Tachov. And quite accidentally they noticed several shiny coins in the foliage and a large stone protruding from the ground. Having pulled out the stone, they realized that they had found a real treasure — there were hundreds of gold and silver coins there!

The young people right away called the Museum of West Bohemia in Pilsen and reported the discovery. Local archaeologist Milan Metlička immediately went to the place where the treasure was discovered.

Underneath the ground there were rare 14th century gold ducats depicting King Charles IV and other monarchs. There were other gold coins, as well as 343 silver groschen. The latter, according to archaeologists, are not of particular historical value. Nevertheless, experts emphasize that the discovery of such a treasure is a truly unique event: after all, nothing like this has happened in the Czech Republic for half a century!

The total weight of the gold coins is 325 grams. At today’s exchange rate their cost would be a little more than 20 thousand dollars. However, Metlička said that due to their historical value, these finds are worth much more than modern gold and silver coins. Ducats are estimated by experts to be worth from 130 thousand to 175 thousand dollars, groschen — about 8 thousand dollars.
