In the City of David (the oldest inhabited area of Jerusalem), archaeologists have discovered a gold ring which is over two thousand years old. The discovered object broadens our understanding of the history of Jerusalem and reveals much about the lifestyle and refined taste of its residents during the Hellenistic period.

In the photo: the discovery was made during excavations at the Jerusalem Walls National Park (Sovev Homot Yerushalayim).

The gold item with a garnet stone has been preserved in perfect condition, retaining its original shine. Tehiya Gangate, a participant in the excavation who made the discovery, recalls: “I was sifting earth through a sieve when I suddenly saw something glimmering. I immediately yelled, 'I found a ring, I found a ring!'”

The other archaeologists immediately came running from all over. Everyone was excited, because such discoveries are rare. According to Tehiya Gangate, she had long dreamed of finding gold jewelry. Her wish came true just a week before leaving for maternity leave.

Dr. Marion Zindel notes that the ring was crafted using techniques characteristic of the early Hellenistic period (late 4th – early 3rd century BCE). Gold jewelry was very popular during that era, which began with the conquests of Alexander the Great. At that time, the culture of Ancient Greece and its luxuries spread over vast territories.

The garnet ring is an excellent example of Hellenistic culture and jewelry craftsmanship. It has enriched the collection of unique historical artifacts found in this place. Gold objects have been discovered here multiple times, indicating that ancient Jerusalem was larger and wealthier than previously thought.
